Poliklinika Sinteza

Cervical cancer screening (using Pap smears and/or HPV testing) is an essential part of every woman’s health routine. If your Pap smear results are abnormal, additional tests are needed to determine the degree of abnormality.

In such cases, a colposcopy is usually recommended. To alleviate fear and discomfort before the procedure, it is helpful to know what to expect.

What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is an examination where the doctor uses a strong LED light and a magnifying device (digital or classic) to closely observe the vulva, perineum, vagina, and cervix. This helps identify areas that appear abnormal compared to normal mucosa and skin, allowing for samples to be taken for detailed analysis.

Who needs colposcopy?

  • Those with abnormal Pap smear results
  • Those with visible changes on the skin and mucosa of the genital area
  • Those with a positive HPV test in certain cases

How is colposcopy performed/examination procedure?

  • The examination is performed in a gynecological clinic in a standard gynecological position.
  • The procedure lasts 10 to 20 minutes.
  • The doctor places the colposcope device in front of the genital area.
  • A speculum is inserted into the vagina to view the cervix, similar to a Pap smear.
  • The cervix is examined under magnification.
  • The cervix is coated with an acetic acid solution and other solutions to highlight abnormal areas – this may cause slight stinging or discomfort.
  • If the findings are normal, the examination ends.
  • If a suspicious area is found, the doctor will take a sample with a sharp instrument. Multiple samples may be taken, which can be uncomfortable.

After colposcopy

  • If no samples are taken, you can return to normal activities without restrictions.
  • If a biopsy is taken, expect light vaginal bleeding for several days.
  • Use pads for bleeding and avoid tampons, menstrual cups, and vaginal intercourse for a week or as advised by your doctor.

Preparation for colposcopy

Your doctor may advise you to:

  • Postpone colposcopy if you have menstrual bleeding.
  • Avoid vaginal intercourse for a day or two before the procedure.
  • Avoid using tampons for a day or two before the procedure.
  • Avoid vaginal suppositories, gels, and other products two days before the procedure.
  • Take pain relievers like Paracetamol, Voltaren, or Ibuprofen half an hour or an hour before the procedure.

Colposcopy results

  • Ask your doctor when you can expect the analysis results if samples were taken.
  • It usually takes about ten days for the analysis to be completed.
  • Based on the results, further intervention or follow-up may be determined.

Risks and precautions

Colposcopy is generally a safe procedure with very few risks.

Rarely, complications may occur during biopsy, such as:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Lower abdominal pain

When to call your doctor?

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms, which may indicate complications:

  • Bleeding heavier than a menstrual period
  • Chills and shaking
  • Fever
  • Severe abdominal pain

Managing fear and discomfort

It is normal to feel scared before the procedure. Anxiety can cause pain and discomfort during the procedure. To feel more secure, you can:

  • Ask your doctor to explain the procedure in detail and provide written materials if available.
  • Write down any questions or concerns to discuss with your doctor on the day of the examination.
  • Engage in relaxing activities or spend time with family and friends (this advice applies to any impending discomfort).
