Endoscopic Laser Sinus Surgery

Sinus surgery

Sinus surgery is often the only solution for sinus conditions that cause headaches, fatigue, reduced sense of smell, and altered resonance (nasal voice). Sinus infections are a common reason patients visit an otolaryngologist. Sinuses are cavities in the skull lined with respiratory mucosa and connected to the nasal cavity. Sinus infections lead to mucus drainage from the nose to the throat, resulting in chronic throat irritation, phlegm, and a persistent cough. Even minimal physical exertion can lead to mouth breathing in these individuals, causing chronic throat inflammation and painful swallowing. Sinusitis can prevent proper air exchange through the Eustachian tube, leading to ear infections, a feeling of pressure in the ear, and hearing loss. Sleep may be disturbed, with frequent snoring and patients often waking up feeling tired and unrested. After a cold, it can take a long time for nasal mucus production to normalize, resulting in a persistent sensation of mucus dripping down the throat.

Nasal polyps (cluster-like growths in the nose)

Nasal polyps develop from thickened and swollen sinus mucosa and are commonly seen in chronic sinusitis, allergies, or in individuals sensitive to salicylates in food or medications. Polyps further obstruct or completely block nasal passages and exacerbate symptoms of the disease. Sinusitis and nasal polyps must be actively treated, including sinus surgery, to prevent complications that can arise from the infection spreading to the eyes and brain. About the procedure

When antibiotics, antihistamines, nasal sprays, aerosols, and inhalations no longer help, modern treatment for sinus disease focuses on precise microsurgical techniques aimed at targeted resolution of the pathology, allowing for rapid recovery and return to daily activities. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is often combined with septoplasty and turbinectomy, as changes in these structures are interrelated. Since sinus disease causes are often complex, continued conservative therapy with medications will be necessary post-surgery to enhance effectiveness and prevent recurrence.

FESS sinus surgery

FESS is performed endoscopically through both nostrils without visible external incisions. The use of the latest Nd-YAG laser and radiofrequency techniques allows for minimal tissue trauma and faster recovery compared to traditional treatments. Modern sinus surgery, performed under day-care conditions, requires highly trained specialists with advanced knowledge in endoscopic and microsurgical techniques, state-of-the-art equipment and instruments, and a dedicated team available to assist patients. Our clinic’s international reputation ensures the quality of care aligns with the latest global trends, providing patients with treatment on an international level.
For patients where extensive sinus surgery is not feasible for any reason, endonasal endoscopic polyp removal with a laser provides rapid recovery and long-lasting symptom relief.

Preparation

Before deciding on the type of treatment, we conduct detailed diagnostics including rhinoscopy, nasal endoscopy, fiberendoscopy, and patency measurements (rhinomanometry). A computerized tomography of the sinuses (CT sinuses) or, preferably, a CB-CT of the sinuses (with lower radiation exposure than conventional CT) is required.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which involves a consultation with our anesthesiologist, laboratory tests, ECG, and spirometry. Modern pain medications ensure the absence of pain after the surgical procedure.

Recovery

Our extensive experience combined with precise surgical techniques allows us to perform sinus, septum, and turbinate surgeries as day surgeries, meaning patients can return home a few hours after the procedure. There are usually no visible changes such as swelling or bruising. After FESS, nasal packing is usually placed to prevent bleeding and is removed after 1-2 days or resorbs spontaneously. In the days following the surgery, the nasal mucosa may be swollen, and nasal drops and emulsions are used to reduce edema and accelerate recovery. Return to daily activities is possible after one week, with physical activity resuming after three weeks.
