Breast Reduction
About Breast Reduction
Large breasts can be both an aesthetic and functional issue for many women. Beyond causing dissatisfaction with one’s appearance, the excessive volume and weight of the breasts often lead to difficulties in performing everyday physical activities, chronic neck and back pain, and more. Breast reduction is a procedure designed to achieve smaller, lighter breasts with a more aesthetically pleasing shape and to address functional problems that impair quality of life.
What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a portion of glandular and fatty tissue, along with excess skin, is removed from the breasts to reduce their volume and reshape them. This procedure also repositions the nipples to a higher position and corrects the size of the areolas (the darker skin around the nipples) if there is dissatisfaction with their size. Since large breasts often also suffer from sagging, breast reduction may include a breast lift (mastopexy) to elevate and firm the breasts.
Who are Candidates for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Besides dissatisfaction with appearance, large breasts can limit physical activities (such as sports or exercise) and cause various issues.
Candidates for breast reduction typically have:
- Chronic pain in the neck, shoulders, and back
- Difficulty during physical activities, such as sports or exercise
- Discomfort during sleep and breathing
- Marks from bra straps on the shoulders
- Frequent skin irritation and rashes under the breasts
- Difficulty finding suitable bras and clothing
- Issues with self-confidence due to the appearance and size of their breasts
While adult women of all ages can be candidates for the procedure, it is worth noting that more permanent results are expected in those who do not plan to become pregnant. Since breast volume naturally increases during pregnancy and breastfeeding, results from the surgery may be partially lost after these conditions.
At Poliklinika Sinteza, you can expect an individualized approach to assess whether you are a candidate for breast reduction, considering your potential issues, breast size and appearance, and the goals you wish to achieve. Sometimes, alongside breast reduction, a breast lift or the insertion of implants might be optimal if there is a concern about sagging breasts or if a more aesthetically pleasing shape and fullness in the upper part of the breasts are desired.

SEND INQUIRYProcedure Overview
Breast reduction typically lasts around 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be unconscious and without any sensation of pain. After anesthesia is administered, the surgeon makes incisions around the nipples and vertically towards the lower part of the breast. At Poliklinika Sinteza, we use the latest short vertical incision technique instead of the classic inverted “T” incision to minimize scars and their visibility. The procedure involves removing glandular and fatty tissue and excess skin, and repositioning the nipple. If necessary, small surgical drains are placed to remove excess fluid, which are usually removed the next day. The incisions are closed with stitches, and an elastic bandage is applied to the breasts.
Risks of Breast Reduction
Rare complications that may occur immediately after the procedure are usually related to reactions to anesthesia, increased bleeding and swelling, or infection.
Other risks after breast reduction include:
- Possible difficulties with breastfeeding
- Asymmetry of the breasts in size or shape
- Loss of sensation in the nipple area
- Hypertrophy of scars
Preparation for Breast Reduction
Preparation includes:
- Laboratory blood tests, ECG, and an anesthesiology consultation
- Showering with antibacterial soap the day before and on the day of the procedure
- Fasting for 8 hours before the procedure
- Removing jewelry and nail polish from hands and feet before the procedure
It is recommended to stop taking blood-thinning medications (such as Andol, Aspirin) and NSAIDs (such as Brufen, Voltaren, Ketonal) 2 weeks before the procedure, as well as to stop smoking 6 weeks before the procedure.
A pre-operative mammogram is also required before breast reduction.
Recovery from Breast Reduction
Recovery from breast reduction is relatively quick, with a return to daily activities expected after 7-10 days. It is necessary to avoid strenuous activities and physical exertion for 6 weeks.
A post-operative compression bra is worn for one month after the procedure to support the breasts and reduce swelling.
Immediate relief regarding breast size and weight is visible after the procedure, but final and complete results are expected after several months, as it takes time for swelling to fully subside.
