Ultrasound and Color Doppler of Veins

About the procedure
Color Doppler (CD) of the legs is a diagnostic test that observes and analyzes blood flow through the blood vessels – veins and arteries – in the legs.
It is a special ultrasound technique (Doppler effect) that provides information about the direction and speed of blood flow in the blood vessels, helping to detect damage and possible blockages in circulation. The blood flow is displayed on the computer using different colors, most commonly red and blue.
Ultrasound color Doppler is a primary tool for diagnosing and monitoring diseases of the veins and arteries of the legs, such as blood clots (thrombosis), changes in the vessel walls, narrowing or widening of blood vessels, and more.
Like other ultrasound examinations, color Doppler of the lower extremities is a painless and safe procedure.
Who needs a color Doppler of the veins and arteries of the legs?
The test is used for diagnosing disorders and damage affecting the blood vessels in the legs. The most common indications for this examination include symptoms such as:
- Numbness/changes in sensation or color of the skin on the legs
- Swelling and a feeling of heaviness in the legs
- Cold feet and toes
- Fatigue, pain, or tension in the thighs, calves, or feet during exertion and movement
- Pain and cramps in the legs at rest
- Slow healing of wounds on the lower extremities
It is also performed after certain types of procedures (e.g., angioplasty or stent placement) to assess the success of the procedure and monitor the condition.

SEND INQUIRYWhat can a color Doppler of the veins and arteries of the legs show?
Ultrasound of the leg blood vessels helps in diagnosing a range of pathological conditions:
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Varicose veins and venous reflux
- Blockage or narrowing of blood vessels
- Blood clot in the leg

Color Doppler results of leg veins and arteries
The results of the examination will show the condition of the venous and arterial system of the legs, based on which the doctor will assess the need for further treatment.
A normal result means that no signs of blood clots, narrowing, dilation, or damage to the blood vessels of the legs, or circulation disorders, have been found.
Abnormal results may indicate conditions such as:
- Thrombosis
- Atherosclerosis
- Blockage of a vein or artery
- Narrowing or widening of an artery
- Venous insufficiency
- Venous reflux

SEND INQUIRYHow is color Doppler of the legs performed?
The procedure is performed in either a standing or lying position. In the lying position, body positions are changed depending on the area being treated at that particular moment. A water-based gel is applied to the skin of the lower extremities to ensure good conductivity of the waves to the tissues. The ultrasound probe is moved over the area of the blood vessels, and an image of them along with the blood flow is immediately displayed on the computer. The examination is painless, although pressure in certain areas may be uncomfortable if they are sensitive or painful.
After the examination, you will immediately receive a medical report and instructions for the optimal type of treatment if necessary (e.g., foam sclerotherapy, mini phlebectomy, laser vein surgery) or therapy, exercises, and dietary recommendations to alleviate symptoms.

FAQ
Does color Doppler hurt?
The examination is not painful, but the pressure from the probe on sensitive or painful areas may cause some discomfort.
When is a color Doppler of veins performed, and when of arteries?
A vein examination is performed when there is suspicion of deep vein or superficial vein thrombosis due to symptoms such as pain, swelling, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs. It is also used in diagnosing chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins.
Arteries are examined when there is suspicion of narrowing or dilation of the arteries, or in diagnosing peripheral artery disease and leg atherosclerosis.
Is color Doppler performed during pregnancy?
The examination is indicated during pregnancy in cases of symptoms like lumps, swelling, pain, and a feeling of heaviness in the legs, especially to rule out deep or superficial vein thrombosis, and to prescribe therapy for varicose veins if needed. Pregnant women are more prone to thrombosis and worsening of varicose veins due to increased abdominal and pelvic pressure, hormonal changes, and reduced mobility.
Is color Doppler the same as ultrasound?
Color Doppler works on the same principle as ultrasound – the probe sends high-frequency sound waves into the body and records the response from the tissue. However, unlike regular ultrasound, color doppler applies a special imaging technique that records changes in the frequency of waves reflected by red blood cells, in order to gather information about the speed and direction of blood flow through the vessels.
