Laser Treatment for Vaginal Atrophy

Treatment description
Laser treatment for vaginal atrophy is a non-invasive procedure that uses a laser to alleviate symptoms caused by (atrophic) changes in the vaginal mucosa. It works by stimulating the regeneration of the mucosa, restoring its moisture and elasticity, and thus easing symptoms such as vaginal dryness, burning sensations, and discomfort during sexual intercourse.
Advantages of the treatment:
- Safe treatment without the use of any hormonal therapy
- Painless
- Does not require anesthesia or an overnight stay in the clinic
- Recovery with minimal discomfort and quick return to normal activities
- Restores the functionality of vaginal tissue by promoting self-regeneration
What is achieved with laser treatment for vaginal atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy can occur at any time in life due to a decrease in estrogen levels, but it is most common during menopause and postmenopause when the hormone level significantly drops. As a result, the vaginal lining becomes pale, thin, and dry, leading to a range of uncomfortable symptoms:
- Dryness, burning, and itching of the vagina
- Discomfort during intercourse
- Increased frequency of vaginal infections
- Urinary issues (painful and frequent urination, incontinence, urinary tract infections)
The laser photothermal energy used in therapy stimulates the production of collagen and elastic fibers, as well as the natural processes of vaginal mucosa regeneration and moisture mechanisms. This increases blood flow and the thickness of the vaginal epithelium, achieving the necessary level of moisture and elasticity, which results in the alleviation of uncomfortable symptoms.

SEND INQUIRYIdeal candidates
Whether you are a candidate for the treatment is determined based on symptoms and a gynecological examination, during which the doctor can observe signs such as pale vaginal mucosa, narrowing of the vagina, damage near the vaginal opening, or an elevated pH.
Laser therapy is recommended for:
- Treating vaginal atrophy with or without hormone therapy
- Women whose vaginal atrophy is a result of chemotherapy, breast cancer, or hysterectomy
- When estrogen therapy is contraindicated
Preparation
Before the treatment, it is necessary to visit a gynecologist for an assessment to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure and whether any additional tests are required. It is also recommended to undergo a routine gynecological examination.
No other special preparation is needed.
Treatment process
The treatment is similar to a gynecological ultrasound: it is performed in a semi-reclining position with legs raised on stirrups. A laser probe (also resembling an ultrasound probe) is then inserted into the vaginal canal, where it delivers laser energy to the tissues. The laser works by heating the epithelial tissue to stimulate the production of new collagen and blood vessels. During the emission of laser beams, a sensation of warmth and tingling may occur, which is alleviated by applying an anesthetic cream beforehand. Procedure lasts about 30 minutes, after which the patient can go home.
Recovery
- The patient can immediately return to daily activities.
- There may be a sensation of vaginal irritation or discomfort, which typically resolves within a week. A lubricant can be used to alleviate this.
- Increased discharge and temporary difficulty in holding urine due to tissue swelling may also occur.
- It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse for one week after the treatment.
